The apocolypse is nigh...
Oct. 23rd, 2010 10:40 amThe Texas Rangers are going to the World Series. Normally, I wouldn't use my fiction journal to mention this but I always considered the idea in the realm of fiction. When I lived in Dallas I got to watch history made as Nolan Ryan pitched the seventh no-hitter in his career. I love the Rangers like people in NYC love the Mets and Chicagoans love their Cubs. But, at least those other teams have been in the World Series. For 50 years the Rangers never have. Except now.
Keep an eye out for bits of sky dropping, or unusual cold from the nether regions, or possibly one of four horsemen riding by.
No, I mean it.

Date: 2010-10-23 07:06 pm (UTC)It's major league baseball. One of the oldest (if not the oldest) national sports championships in the country is theirs: The World Series. Legend has it that German spies in America were caught because they didn't know who won. We're so inundated here that most everyone, even those who have no interest in sports, can usually tell you who won the World Series (and the Superbowl - American football).
The Texas Rangers have been a team that's been moved around a lot, but they're fifty years old. Most every team that's been around that long has managed to win a championship series. Except the Rangers. Now, they have finally made it.
Oh, and Nolan Ryan? One of the legends of baseball here. He had a fastball (straight into the plate) that clocked at 106 miles per hour. He had a curve ball that would positively jump over the bat. And a slider that looked exactly like a curve ball until it lost all of its momentum the moment it reached the batter. You could see it fall under the bat.
When a pitcher makes it through the entire game with no batter making it to first base after making contact with the ball, that's called a no-hitter, and it's hard to do. Nolan Ryan had seven no-hitters. No one else has even come close. He pitched for the Rangers for a few years and I was lucky enough to see him.
And yeah, I'm happy about it. I'm just nervous about the consequences to life as we know it should they actually win.

Oh, and if one of the four horsement is Methos bring on THE END... just saying.
